Claude API Unified Billing Across Multiple Providers
What "unified billing" actually means for Claude API users
If you searched for this, you're probably dealing with one of two problems: your team has multiple Claude subscriptions or API accounts spread across people and projects, each generating its own invoice and usage report, or you're mixing Claude with other model providers and want one place to see what everything costs. "Unified billing" in this context doesn't mean Anthropic sends you a single combined invoice for Claude plus OpenAI plus Gemini — no provider does that natively. It means putting a billing and metering layer in front of your model usage so that, from your finance team's perspective, there's one subscription, one invoice, and one dashboard, regardless of how many internal teams or applications are actually calling the model.
This matters because raw API access from Anthropic bills per-account, per-API-key, with usage reported in the Anthropic console tied to that account. The moment you have more than one team, more than one client project, or more than one person with console access, you end up reconciling multiple invoices by hand in a spreadsheet. That's the problem unified billing solves — not a change in how the underlying model provider charges you, but a layer that aggregates and simplifies it on your side.
Why Claude billing gets fragmented in the first place
A few common patterns cause this:
- Per-developer accounts. Each engineer signs up for a Claude Pro or Max plan to prototype, then someone needs production API access, and now you have five separate billing relationships with Anthropic.
- Per-project API keys with no shared view. Different projects spin up their own Anthropic accounts because nobody wants to share a single root API key across unrelated codebases.
- Agencies and consultancies. You bill multiple clients for AI-powered features but all the usage runs through accounts that don't map cleanly to client invoices.
- No seat or role concept. Anthropic's console is built around an organization, not around granular seats with individual limits, so teams improvise with multiple accounts instead.
None of these are wrong decisions in isolation, but they all produce the same symptom: finance can't answer "what do we actually spend on Claude" without manual work.
Two ways to unify billing
Option 1: Build an internal proxy. You stand up a service that holds the real Anthropic API key, issues your own internal tokens to teams, meters usage per token, and aggregates it into one report. This works, but it's infrastructure you now own and maintain — rate limiting, key rotation, streaming passthrough, retry logic, and a dashboard someone has to build and keep updated.
Option 2: Use a billing layer that already does this. This is the gap SubToAPI fills for Claude specifically. It turns your existing Claude access into a proper HTTPS API with application keys (sub_live_...) that you issue per team or per project, while the billing itself is unified under one SubToAPI subscription.
How this looks in practice
With SubToAPI, you sign up once, and every application or team member gets their own sub_live_... key rather than a separate Anthropic account. All usage — tokens in, tokens out, by key — rolls up into one dashboard and one invoice on your SubToAPI plan.
A basic request looks like standard Claude API usage, just pointed at SubToAPI's endpoint:
curl https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SUBTOAPI_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "claude-sonnet-4-5",
"max_tokens": 1024,
"messages": [
{"role": "user", "content": "Summarize this ticket in two sentences."}
]
}'
Each team or project gets its own key, but all of it bills against the same SubToAPI account:
// Project A key
const projectAKey = process.env.PROJECT_A_SUBTOAPI_KEY;
// Project B key, same SubToAPI organization, same invoice
const projectBKey = process.env.PROJECT_B_SUBTOAPI_KEY;
async function askClaude(apiKey, prompt) {
const res = await fetch("https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
"Authorization": `Bearer ${apiKey}`,
"Content-Type": "application/json",
},
body: JSON.stringify({
model: "claude-sonnet-4-5",
max_tokens: 500,
messages: [{ role: "user", content: prompt }],
}),
});
return res.json();
}
Because usage metadata is returned with every response, you can attribute cost per key without building your own token-counting pipeline. See /docs/messages for the full request/response shape and /docs/streaming if your application needs streamed output — streaming is billed the same way and still shows up in the unified usage view.
Unifying across seats, not just keys
The billing fragmentation problem is usually a people problem as much as a technical one. SubToAPI's Team (€19/seat) and Scale (€49/seat) plans are built around this: each person gets a seat with their own key and limits, but the organization sees one combined usage report and one invoice. That's the practical definition of unified billing for a Claude-based product — not a multi-provider mega-invoice, but one clean line item covering everyone using Claude under your roof.
If you're currently on Solo (€9) and outgrowing it because a second person needs access, moving to Team doesn't change how you call the API — it just adds seats under the same billing relationship. You can start on a free trial at /signup and check current seat pricing at /pricing before committing.
If you genuinely need multi-provider unification
If your real requirement is combining Claude spend with other model providers (OpenAI, Gemini, etc.) into one true invoice, no tool — SubToAPI included — merges separate vendors' bills into a single Anthropic-style invoice, because each provider bills independently regardless of what sits in front of them. What you can do is standardize your Claude usage through one billing layer so that at least your Claude costs are unified, then reconcile that one line item against other providers manually or through your own cost-tracking system. Trying to solve this at the provider level isn't realistic; solving it at the "how many Claude accounts do we actually have" level is.
Questions
Does SubToAPI change how Anthropic bills me? No. SubToAPI consolidates your Claude usage under one subscription and one set of application keys; it doesn't alter Anthropic's own pricing, it replaces having multiple fragmented accounts with one billing relationship.
Can I give each team member their own API key under one invoice? Yes, that's exactly what Team and Scale seats are for — each person or project gets a sub_live_... key, and all usage rolls up into a single dashboard and invoice. Details at /pricing.
Will this merge Claude and OpenAI billing into one invoice? No single tool does that, since each model provider bills independently. SubToAPI unifies everything on the Claude side; combining across unrelated vendors still requires your own reconciliation step.
